Peugeot’s 2008 was officially launched in the UK back in 2013, and has been a strong seller as both a new and used car ever since. Its mix of a compact body shape, stylish design and spacious interior make it an excellent option in the growing hatchback/SUV crossover segment.

Exterior

The 2008 follows the most recent styling language that has been rolled out throughout the Peugeot range, with sharp headlights and a distinctively-Peugeot front grille. The roof rails and plastic extensions to the bumpers and wheel arches are clues to this car’s adventurous nature, with the raised ride height giving it the desirable SUV-look.

Interior

Peugeot like to keep things simple with their interiors, with a nice central touchscreen to control navigation and multimedia and a traditional dial layout for the speedometer and rev counter. Space is the main advantage the 2008 has over its hatchback stablemate, the 208, with a roomy interior that can seat 5 people nice and easily.

Driving

Because of its raised ride height, the 2008 gives you a good view of the road and the world around you, allowing you to navigate your way through city streets and into parking spaces with ease. While it’s officially referred to as an SUV, the compact dimensions give you a hatchback-like driving experience and all the controls are easy to operate.

Practicality

One of the main reasons for the growth in the crossover/SUV segment is their extra layer of practicality over the traditional family hatchback, and the 2008 is certainly more spacious than the 208, which is fairly a roomy car itself. The boot is a really good size and the 60:40 split folding rear seats give even more space if you need to get a 7ft Christmas tree in the back.

Engines

The popular engine choices in the 2008 range are the 1.2-litre PureTech turbocharged petrol and the 1.6-litre BlueHDi diesel, with the former you’re likely to see around 45-55 mpg, and the latter is capable of 60-70mpg.

Choose the petrol if you spend most of your time in and around town doing short journeys, or the diesel if you frequently travel up and down the motorway or do more than 10,000 miles a year.
