One of the best ways to spend a weekend or holiday is by piling into the car with your mates for a road trip to the seaside or countryside. And as we all know, the way to make a road trip truly unforgettable is to have an absolutely banging playlist.
Getting all your passengers to agree on the tunes for said playlist might be a tough task though. Imagine if you had the ultimate road trip playlist, with the very best songs for cruising along, based on public opinion.
Well, we have created such a playlist.
How did we do it?
We used the search term 'road trip' to collect 500 playlists from Spotify (a grand total of 126,350 songs), and analysed the data to count the number of times each song appeared in the list, meaning we could rank them according to popularity. But which song came out on top??
We can reveal that the number 1 road trip playlist, according to Spotify users, is...Sweet Home Alabama! The classic '70s rock song by Lynyrd Skynyrd came up 142 times in the 500 playlists, being chosen 32 more times than the runner-up, Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. Hotel California by Eagles came third with 105 mentions.
The top 25 includes several singalong favourites, including pop and rock classics, and a bit of a country flavour too. This playlist might be best suited for cruising across the USA (especially if you plan to visit Alabama or California) with the top three songs all by American '70s rock bands and 15 of the top 25 by American artists. However, the only artist with more than one song in the top 25 is British band Queen, with three songs.
The playlist has an old school feel too, with seven of the songs released in the '70s and seven from the '80s. There's even one from the '60s: Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival, released in 1969. This is the oldest song in the list, while the most recent is Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) - Remix by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, which is evidently a road trip favourite already despite only being released in April (even better if you're travelling by horse).
